There is a difference between blindness and closing one's eyes. We mustn't be blinded and ignore whats happening around us in this quest for finding our true selves. I have come across many spiritual people who believe their surroundings are how god wants it to be, how he made it. I on the other hand, believe that god did make everything, but only the outside. The inside is our own doing, and as you rightly said, we need to find it. We haven't been sent on earth for a purpose other than what we want it to be. We don't have a task to complete in our lifetime on this planet. We are the owners of our lives. We decide which path to take and which goal to shoot in.
